Everything you need for the ultimate in water sports

It's the swimming opportunities above all that draw guests to the lake district every summer, but sailing and surf schools and various boat hire facilities are also calculated to appeal to water sports enthusiasts of all kinds. The region's attractions are very well connected by an extensive network of cycle paths. Our tip: leave your car behind and get your hands on an e-bike for a stress-free ride to Salzburg's lake district – with added health benefits!

The very best of water sports

Diving is an important pastime throughout the entire Salzkammergut region. Most lakes feature diving schools with experienced teachers to introduce you to the underwater world. The largest lake in Austria, the Binnensee, has some fabulous water sports activities to offer, but the beautiful Attersee is the only place you can dive down and see submerged standing stones - created to symbolise the prehistoric pile dwellings that once stood in this area.

The wind is always with you

Attersee, Mondsee, Traunsee, Wolfgangsee: these are the great lakes of the Salzkammergut region, exciting hotspots for surfing and sailing. The Mondsee is home to the largest sailing school in the German-speaking world, offering sailing excitement against the fabulous backdrop of the Drachenwand mountains. Great wind conditions make the Traunsee a top insider's tip for windsurfing and kitesurfing – and that applies equally to the Attersee, the largest lake in the Salzkammergut.

The Salzkammergut and its lakes are not far from our guesthouse:

  • Mondsee – a swimming lake and something more
  • Fuschlsee – the gateway to the Salzkammergut region
  • Attersee – the largest inland lake in Austria
  • Traunsee – Austria's deepest lake
  • Wolfgangsee – teeming with fish and home to boating traditions

Do you like to swim? Then Mondsee makes a good starting point. This lake is only a short distance from Hallwang, and its elevated water temperature makes it an attractive swimming destination. If you'd like to combine your swim with some vigorous exercise, then the Fuschlsee is the place for you. The jogging circuit along the magnificent forest paths around the Fuschlsee takes just over an hour to complete, and by then you'll be really looking forward to flinging yourself into the crystal-clear lake waters.

The lakes of the Salzburg region and the Salzkammergut are arguably the perfect destination for swimming and water sport enthusiasts.
